Maintaining elevators is essential. Elevators have a lot of moving parts and have to deal with a great deal of weight on a constant basis. In the same way that a car should be regularly serviced and have all of its safety features and parts checked so to should a lifts parts be checked. You can maintain your own car but you can’t maintain your own lift, parts aren’t usually standard and it is very difficult to check the safety of a lift without special equipment that will test the strength of cables, wear on brakes and other parts and so on.
An elevator maintenance company may even specialize ion certain makes of lifts or you may be able to get a maintenance contract with the original manufacturer. In other cases the manufacturer will have recommended and approved repairers and maintenance companies who should ideally be used and will usually only use approved new parts made but he original manufacturer themselves. Many building owners let their lifts break before calling a company, this is fine as long as it simply stops working but even modern lifts with safety features can if not properly maintained break and lead to an accident.
